Attempting to delete duplicates, "show exact duplicates" checks all instances of some songs

I’m attempting to delete duplicates in my iTunes library (thousands). I display “exact duplicates”, but for some songs, it checks all instances of the same song, so I can’t delete checked without losing these songs altogether. Is there a way to correct this, or do I have to go through the entire library song by song?

Using latest version of iTunes on a windows PC.  I’ve read the directions for deleting duplicates, but my situation is not covered.
